This is a short note about the map that I have been working on. I didn’t do anything really to the map, other than change out the color scheme, map’s texture and the paths/roads themselves. I am starting to dig it even more now.

So I finally bit the bullet and started really working on the map more. I actually broke down and bought some software to help me as I was having issues getting things how I wanted them. The software is called Wonderdraft, and it looks to be exactly what I am wanting.

For now, I think I am done with the map until I get another swath of creativity.

I am not a very clever person when it comes to writing and how people interact. This will be my greatest hurdle to overcome while taking on this endeavor of generating a world that feels alive and genuine. But that is the task that I have given myself.

I started out this journey months ago. Years if I am to be honest. I first started looking up how to make my own maps. I found the Cartographer’s Guild and started learning how to do this. I have had some success, and other failures. I have yet to give up on making the maps as I have either not realized that I have not the skill to make a good map, or I have yet to find that skill lurking. Here is a recent map that I have going on for this endeavor as a map on paper.

From here, I have gone on to name the cities/towns that I have dotted on the map. This was a relatively quick process to achieve with the use of the Castle Oldskull World Generation guide. There are a lot of different tables within this work that allows the generation of a world without much effort from someone. For me, I am only using it for parts of this as I want it to be my world, and not a world entirely built upon someone else’s process. There are aspects that I want to control, and others that I don’t mind relinquishing to someone else.

So, as the title here suggests, I have decided to take some time away from my solo RPG adventure and focus on learning a few tools that will ultimately help me out with said adventure.

I have backed a KickStarter project for the Lazy DM part two, and I have a friend who is willing to participate in my world building exercise of Roleplaying for History. In such, I plan to incorporate the following into a campaign to achieve a few goals.

  • Return of the Lazy DM
  • Mythic GME
  • The Tome of Adventure Design
  • d100 Dungeon
  • Castle Oldskull : Game World Generator
  • Castle Oldskull : The Classic Dungeon Design Guide
  • Common Sense and my own brain

The goals that I want to achieve are:

  • Generate a game world that is believable and feels alive
  • Create a narrative around a central player and expand their knowledge of the world and their importance, or lack there of, in it
  • Create realistic, yet satisfying, content that is neither over the top OP combat nor underwhelming
  • Have a good time with a friend and test out my creative skills

Well, not specifically redoing the map, but continuing on getting the map to look how I have it in my head. As such, this took most of my weekend to get to… After dealing with a small flood of water from a drain pipe inside of our walls.

Back to the fun stuff though. I am no artist. And so when I started hand drawing my map, I had intended to do it in a way that I would be able to scan it in and finish it digitally. Well… I got carried away and started putting mountains… hills… forests… you get the point. So, after I scanned the image in it was no longer possible to easily finish the map in the electronic format. That is where I was last week. A scanned image and no layers. Over the weekend that changed. I was able to spend some time cutting out the names, for example, and adding other aspects that I wanted the map to have. This leads me to the most recent changes to my world. I started adding the ripples that I like from my first attempt at making a region map. The first thing that needed to happen was some shading for the water.

After giving the shadow layer some transparency, and turning on all of the layers, except the names, I decided upon a final look for the map. Well, final is a strong word. Colors will likely change here and there as I get more biomes and regions defined. In the end though, I am here:

This already looks better to my eye. And once I get the mountains, hills, and forests cut out and onto their own layers, things will be in an even easier place to get digital art onto the map instead of my poor hand drawn ones.
